Here’s why I’ll NEVER try to do my own juice cleanse EVER again...
Let’s admit it, we’ve all tried to be an avid “DIY-er” to save time, money or for ego’s sake, and probably all have been humbled in one way or another when we realise that sometimes, it’s best to leave it to the experts...
As you can see, my skin went from mild acne to smooth, clear and healthy.
You deserve to know the truth about my juicing experience.
I remember my first juice cleanse back in 2019.. (lol) - After enjoying smoothies for many years and never actually trying a juice in my life and if anything, I was genuinely excited. I went in with the hero mentality of “how hard could it be”... turns out, pretty f-ing hard!
I decided to save money and juice myself. I spent a lot of time researching the best juices and the order to drink them. I spent hours at a local farm shop sourcing organic ingredients, bought a juicer, and prepared for my first-ever 3-day juice cleanse...
I knew how important it was to drink the juices fresh to retain their nutrient potency, so I planned to make my juices fresh. I started the first one… the prep was long, not to mention the cleaning of the juicer afterward. Finally, I had my first juice in front of me, a blend of beetroot, apple, carrot and lemon.
I watched the juice pour into the glass, the vibrant oranges and purples blending into a rainbow of goodness.
This is it. The start of a new, healthier me.
I reached for my glass and placed it under my nose. It didn’t smell quite as appetizing as I’d expected, but it didn’t shake my spirit too much. I placed the glass to my lips and took a large gulp… oh, the horror that awaited me was unexpected for sure! It was vile. The taste strongly resembled how I’d imagine the soil from my front garden to taste. I had gone into the cleanse under the impression I was going to live on smoothies for 72 hours, and I was sorely mistaken.
This is when the weight of my decision dawned on me… I have three whole days of this.
I must have spent over $650 on the juicer and all of the fruit and veggies, not worth it.
“As the day wore on, I felt sick, tired and low on energy.”
Oh, how I went on a rollercoaster of emotions during those three days. By the middle of day one, I found myself reasoning with myself internally :
“People do 24-hour cleanses... maybe this one is more suitable for me.”
“Maybe I could have one meal a day and juice, that’s still healthy?”
It took every ounce of willpower for me not to cave into my weak, hangry mind at that moment.
As the day wore on, I felt sick, tired and low on energy. And let me tell you, I didn’t even consider the type of torture it would be to have to prepare solid fruit & vegetables in this state and not be able to eat them. I think I fantasised over biting into one of those carrots more than I did over Robert Pattinson in my teen years, and I can assure you.. that was a lot.
In just three days, I was amazed at how a juice cleanse got rid of bloating from every part of my body!
Day two came, I woke to the familiar pang of hunger. I stared at myself in the mirror, and as somebody who gets bloated just by looking at a piece of bread (and even sometimes salads) it felt nice not to be bloated at all since the cleanse started. I’ll admit, pushing through after day one gave me newfound willpower to see it through - out of pure stubbornness and refusal to fail after enduring it that far. But it was in no way an enjoyable experience!
In hindsight, even though I had done plenty of research I don’t feel like I had truly educated myself on what to expect. I didn’t know how to make tasty juices, and I was so hungry when I had finished my sixth and final juice of the day.

“I had a moment of weakness, and the cravings took over.. it’s not a moment I’m proud of”
There was a moment on day two where I must have been fantasising over all of the meals I’d like to eat for at least an hour. One meal that had set up camp in my mind was bolognese. Over and over again I envisioned myself slurping up a delicious bowl of spaghetti.
I had a weak moment and the cravings took over. I marched to the fridge... The hanger had become something more tangible. (For context.. imagine a zombie, arms stretched out in front, mumbling “must have spaghetti” - then you’ll have some form of imagery for how I was in that moment. )
Now comes a moment that I’m not proud of… rummaging through the fridge, I pulled out some peppers (red and yellow to be precise), a zucchini, some large tomatoes and fresh basil - it was a miracle that I had these ingredients in the fridge, it was surely fate.
I proceeded to juice the vegetables.
I couldn’t contain my excitement as I closed my eyes, took a whiff and the familiar smell of spaghetti bolognese filled my senses.
“If you’ve ever considered drinking spaghetti sauce to curb a craving during a cleanse, I’ll save you the time now.. just don’t.”
Again, you’d think I had learned my lesson by now, but clearly not.
I took a sip. Firm no.
If you’ve ever considered drinking spaghetti sauce to curb a craving for Italian food… I’ll save you the time now. Just don’t.
By this point I admitted defeat and went to bed early, desperate to be closer to the end of day three - and one step closer to a real meal… weirdly I was actually no longer craving bolognese though.
Day three arrives, the final day. The end is near.
I will admit, I felt
energised, lighter and had lost a visible amount of weight…
I also felt
tighter, less sluggish and my skin had cleared up
visibly.
Conclusion? Juice cleanses WORK.... but considering doing it yourself?
Good luck.
I can assure you, it looked a lot better than it tasted.
Here’s the takeaways from my juice cleanse experience...
Pros
I lost a visible amount of weight and actually kept the weight off too.
I felt lighter and more energised, and felt motivated to get back to the gym
For the first time in my life, I wasn’t bloated.
My acne had cleared up and my skin had a noticeable glow. I actually never struggled with my acne again after regular juice cleanses.
Cons
I didn’t have the energy to be making each juice fresh when my body was going through a detox.
My own juices tasted awful.
I still felt hungry after 6 juices, more would have been better to stop the headaches, cravings and low blood sugar levels.
Preparing the juices meant handling solid fruit and vegetables, this tested my willpower for sure!!
“Why are you still drinking juices with additives and chemicals in?”
Let’s fast forward to 2024.
I’m no longer making my own juices and have just completed my fifth juice cleanse with Lemonkind, it is becoming a ritual.
It isn’t something that requires much planning because they have an average shelf life of 18 months, so there’s a space in my pantry that is always stocked with them!
Any time I feel sluggish, or my skin is breaking out or I need to debloat… I just reach into my pantry and start the cleanse whenever feels right for me.
No brain power goes into it, and before I know it I feel reset and back on track.
It’s convenient to know that I don’t have to defrost my juices last minute, or even worse make them fresh ever again!
The pouches keep the juices fresh without any additives... meaning I get the luxury of drinking nutrient dense, freshly juiced juices.... with the freedom of long-life products.
It’s a no brainer!
I have to say, i’m a little bit of a self confessed Lemonkind fan girl now
“They actually taste good, and it’s an enjoyable experience”
An important factor for me is they actually taste good.
I was mind blown, in the most beautiful way, to discover that a cleanse could actually taste good and be an enjoyable experience. They have a wide range of exotic flavours too (not just the typical ones).
Oh, and in case you were wondering…
No, unfortunately they don’t have bolognese flavour…
Sorry to disappoint.
